If straightening your teeth has been on the list for years and this is the year you deal with it, the first decision is between fixed braces and clear aligners. Prime Smile Dental Clinic fits both, from one clinic inside Casey Medical Centre in Clyde, and Beaconsfield is in Victoria's south-east on the run between Berwick and Officer, well inside the catchment the practice looks after. Jonemson Perez opened it in 2023 as a general dental practice, so straightening runs alongside the check-ups, X-rays and children's appointments your dentist in Beaconsfield already handles. Which of the two suits your case is not settled by preference. It follows what an examination shows about how far your teeth actually have to travel, and you hear the reasoning before you commit to anything.

What Fixed Braces Do Well, and What Aligners Do Well
Braces are brackets bonded to the teeth with a wire running through them. The wire works continuously and asks nothing of you, which is why it stays the more controllable tool when teeth have to rotate, when the bite is being corrected rather than the front teeth tidied, or when the distance to cover is genuinely long.
Clear aligners are a graded series of transparent trays. Each one is shaped to your teeth at a particular stage of the plan and worn until the next takes over. They lift out to eat and to brush, and most people around you will never register that you have them in. The appeal and the risk come from a single feature: a tray in a pocket moves nothing.
What the choice comes down to:
- The size of the job. Mild crowding and modest gaps are comfortable aligner territory. Rotations, bite work and long distances lean towards a wire.
- Whether the trays would realistically stay in through busy weeks, holidays and the days you feel unwell.
- Whether being visibly in treatment matters to you at work or in a classroom.
- What you are willing to give up at the table. Braces put the hard and the sticky off the menu until they come off. Aligners come out for the meal.
Neither one is the upgrade. They are different tools, and a case well served by one is often poorly served by the other. Both are covered in more detail on our braces and clear aligners page.
How Many Visits Straightening Takes, and When You Can Book Them
Straightening is a course of treatment rather than an appointment. Braces need periodic adjusting and aligners need progress checks as you work through the series, so you are back in the chair a number of times before it is finished. That is worth knowing before you start, because the visits have to fit a work roster or a school timetable rather than the other way round.
The clinic is open seven days:
- Monday to Friday: 9am to 6pm
- Saturday: 8am to 6pm
- Sunday: 9am to 3pm
Weekend and late-afternoon appointments are on the ordinary roster rather than being an exception, which is what keeps most adjustment visits from costing anybody a day. Every appointment happens at the one clinic in Clyde.
Beaconsfield lies on the corridor that runs through Berwick, Officer and Pakenham in south-eastern Victoria, and practices along it routinely look after patients from several suburbs at once, which is why the same rooms fit clear aligners and braces in Harkaway too. Crossing into a neighbouring pocket of the region for dental care is ordinary out here, and it is how most families in this part of the state already arrange it. Book through the form on this site at any hour, or call (03) 592 922 53 or 0477 138 908 during opening hours.
Preferred Providers
What Goes Into the Quote, and the Ways to Fund It
Nobody can put a number on straightening before looking in your mouth. Four things move it: how far the teeth have to travel, which appliance does the moving, how long the treatment is expected to run, and whether anything else has to be treated first. That is why a quote arrives attached to a plan rather than on its own. Contact us for current pricing, and expect the figure and the reasoning behind it to reach you before treatment starts, not after.
The pathways patients use to cover it:
- Private health cover. The practice is a preferred provider with health funds, so what comes back depends on your level of cover and how much of the annual limit is left. Bring the card to the assessment.
- Afterpay and Zip, which turn a single bill into scheduled instalments.
- Payment plans through the finance companies the practice partners with, for treatment that runs across many visits.
- Early release of superannuation, which some patients apply for towards major dental work. It takes time to arrange, so raise it at the first appointment rather than the last.
- Medicare’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule, for eligible children up to 17, which covers a set list of general dental services. Ask us to check what your child’s entitlement actually reaches before you plan around it.
Cash and card cover the balance.
Who Fits Your Appliance at Prime Smile Dental Clinic
Jonemson Perez opened Prime Smile Dental Clinic in 2023, and it has worked from the same Clyde rooms since. Every dentist on the team holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from an accredited university and is certified by the Australian Dental Council.
That counts for more on straightening than it does on a single filling, because the treatment runs for months. One practice takes your records at the start, sees you through every adjustment, and deals with a chipped edge or a filling that gives way halfway through without sending you across town for it or for anything else on the list, dentures in Beaconsfield included. Who works here, and what each of them trained in, is set out on our about page.
Age, Wear Time and the Reasons a Dentist Pushes Back
Age is the objection people raise first, and it is the weakest of them. Bone keeps remodelling throughout life, so adults well past their twenties are straightened as a matter of routine. What genuinely decides whether your mouth is ready is the state of the gums, the bone holding the teeth, and any decay left untreated. Those are checked before a plan is drawn, and if something needs dealing with first, straightening starts a few months later than you hoped rather than on top of a problem.
The second objection is the one patients hear as a pitch in reverse: a dentist recommending braces to somebody who walked in asking for trays. There are two honest reasons for that. The movement your case needs may be better controlled by a fixed wire, which is true where teeth have to rotate or a bite is being corrected. Or the trays would not be worn enough to work, and a plan built on wear time that does not happen simply falls behind.
Neither reason is a judgement about you, and neither should be hinted at rather than said. If you are steered towards one appliance, you are entitled to ask which of the two reasons applies to your mouth, and to get a straight answer.

If the Patient Is a Child, the Timing Question Changes
Parents around this part of Victoria ask when a child should first be looked at for straightening, and the answer is earlier than expected. A jaw that is still growing gives a dentist something to work with that a finished adult jaw no longer offers, and that window does not stay open indefinitely.
Alongside braces and aligners, the practice uses myofunctional appliances. These are removable, and they work on the muscle patterns and habits around developing teeth rather than pushing on the teeth alone. Guiding growth while it is still happening is a different proposition from correcting the result of it a decade later.
If adult teeth are coming through crowded or twisted, or a habit such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing has not stopped, mention it when you book instead of waiting for a routine check-up to raise it. Paediatric appointments here are deliberately unhurried, which matters when the patient is nervous and the treatment is a course rather than a single visit.
What You Leave the First Appointment Knowing
An assessment tells you which appliance your case calls for, how long it would run and what it would cost, and none of it obliges you to begin. Bring your health fund card, and a child’s Medicare details if the patient is a teenager.
The booking form on this site takes appointments at any hour, and the phones are (03) 592 922 53 or 0477 138 908 through opening hours. Say it is teeth straightening you want looked at.

The Questions That Come Up in the Chair
Every straightening quote I find online is a different number. Why?
Because they are quotes for different mouths. Straightening is priced case by case, and figures published by other practices describe their patients and their own fee structures rather than yours. The only number worth anything to you is the one attached to a plan for your teeth, which is why it follows an examination. Contact us for current pricing.
My friend was told to have braces rather than trays. What decides that?
How far the teeth have to move, and in what direction. A fixed wire gives a dentist more control over rotation and over bite correction, so cases involving either tend to be steered that way. Two people with what looks like identical crowding can end up with different appliances for exactly that reason.
I have heard people give up on the trays. What actually goes wrong?
Giving up on the trays starts without a decision. The hours drop off, the teeth fall behind the sequence, the next tray in the set stops seating properly, and wearing it starts to feel pointless. The fix is unglamorous. Raise it at a progress check instead of skipping the appointment, and the plan is rebuilt from where the teeth actually are now.
I am closer to forty than twenty. Does that rule me out?
No. Teeth keep their ability to move for as long as the bone and gums around them are healthy, and plenty of adults begin treatment long after they first thought about it. Healthy gums and sound bones are the real gatekeepers, not the year on your licence.
I dread dental appointments. Does that change what is possible?
Say so when you book, because an anxious patient gets a different appointment from one who says nothing. Dr Jeff Field, an anaesthetist, is part of the team, and sedation is available for treatment that would otherwise be too much to sit through.
Coming in from Beaconsfield, how much of the year does this take up?
The individual visits are short. It is the span that is long, with adjustments or progress checks spread across the course of treatment, and most of them can be booked on a Saturday or a Sunday morning. Mention the days that are impossible for you at the first appointment so the visits can be set accordingly.
