What a Fixed Wire Does That a Removable Tray Cannot

Braces are brackets bonded to the teeth with a wire running between them. The wire keeps working whether or not you think about it, which is why braces stay the more predictable choice when teeth have a long way to travel or the bite itself is being corrected.

Clear aligners are a series of transparent trays made to fit your teeth, each one worn in turn until the next takes over. They lift out for meals and for brushing, so your daily routine barely changes, and most people will not notice you are wearing them. The catch is built into that convenience: they only move teeth while they are in.

Where the two genuinely differ:

  • The appliance stays put, or it comes out. Brackets and wire are bonded on until the dentist removes them. Trays lift out in seconds.
  • Forgetting carries different consequences. A wire keeps working through a bad week. A tray left in its case does nothing at all.
  • Food changes, or it does not. Braces rule out the hard and the sticky for the whole treatment. Aligners come out and you eat as normal.
  • The harder movements. Where teeth need rotating, or the bite needs shifting, a fixed wire gives the dentist more control.

    Questions People Ask Before Starting Treatment

    I am in my mid-thirties. Is that too late?

    No. There is no age at which teeth stop being able to move. What the examination checks is whether the gums and the bone are healthy enough for them to be moved, and that is a question about your mouth, not about the year on your licence.

    Why would a dentist talk me out of clear aligners?

    Two reasons, and neither is that the trays are poor treatment. Either the movement your case needs is better controlled by a fixed wire, or your days make wearing a tray for most of them unlikely. You should hear which one applies to you, in plain terms, before you pay for anything.

    What happens if I stop wearing the trays for a while?

    Nothing moves, and the teeth can drift back towards where they started, so the next tray in the series stops fitting properly. That is how most abandoned aligner treatment ends: gradually, rather than by anyone deciding to quit. Say so at your next visit instead of skipping it, and the plan can be looked at again.

    Why will nobody quote me a price over the phone?
