Neither appliance does anything clever. Both hold steady pressure on a tooth until it travels through the bone around it. What separates them is what each one asks of you while that happens.

Fixed braces go on and stay on. Brackets sit on the teeth, a wire runs between them, and the wire keeps pulling whether you are thinking about it or not. That constant control is why a wire remains the better tool when teeth have a long way to go, when individual teeth need turning, or when the bite itself is being altered rather than the front teeth tidied. Braces ask you for patience with cleaning, and some care around hard and sticky food.

Clear aligners are a series of thin, barely visible trays, each shaped for one stage of the movement. They lift out for meals and for brushing, so nothing changes about what you eat or how you clean. What they ask for is discipline. A tray only works while it is in your mouth, and a set sitting in its case on the bench does nothing at all. Straightening is not one appointment. Braces are adjusted as the teeth answer the wire, and aligner patients are reviewed as they work through the series, so you will be back in the chair on and off for months.
